BMW ConnectedRide Navigator GPS: test & review

One of the latest technological innovations, the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator motorcycle GPS, raised many questions upon its release. What does it bring that's new? Is it relevant when smartphones can serve as GPS? To answer all your questions and provide a list of the device's strengths and weaknesses, we conducted a real-world test. Discover my test and review of the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator GPS.

Introduction of the new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator motorcycle GPS

More than just a motorcycle GPS, the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator is a revolution in displaying data, routes, and navigation. A high-tech gem, the device is part of the growing ConnectedRide range developed by BMW. Connecting your motorcycle, phone, intercom, and more, the Navigator does much more than just provide directions.

The ConnectedRide Navigator represents innovation in motorcycle technology. This GPS meets the needs of modern motorcyclists by connecting to smartphones via the BMW Motorrad Connected app. So, it does much more than take you from point A to point B, the Navigator integrates advanced features that make every journey more intuitive, secure, and enjoyable.

Comparison: BMW Navigator 6 vs. BMW ConnectedRide Navigator

The predecessor in motorcycle navigation at BMW is the Navigator VI. Widely used among many bikers, including myself, it seems necessary to compare these two GPS units.

BMW Navigator 6 was a GPS primarily for motorcycles (though usable in cars). It offered various options such as avoiding highways, preferring winding roads, and calculating the best routes for motorcycle trips. Developed in partnership with Garmin, this GPS also featured technological functions like playing music via smartphone and managing calls. Its downside was its notorious bugs.

The new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator replaces the Nav 6 and revolutionizes motorcycle navigation. This new GPS, developed exclusively by BMW (no longer in partnership with Garmin), integrates numerous technologies. Firstly, the GPS features a redesigned 5.5-inch brighter touchscreen. This Navigator seamlessly integrates into your motorcycle's ecosystem and becomes a true extension of the dashboard, controllable via the multi-controller.

Also connected to your phone with the BMW Motorrad Connected app, the GPS can synchronize to update maps and traffic data in real-time. This synchronization also allows you to plan your routes via your phone. This ConnectedRide Navigator GPS allows the installation of applications such as Spotify and can manage your music and calls. Your contacts can be imported into the device. And if you prefer not to connect your phone, the GPS can operate with its own SIM card.

BMW ConnectedRide Navigator Motorcycle GPS Test: Under What Conditions?

To test the full range of features of this ConnectedRide Navigator, I used the GPS under different weather conditions (rain and sun), at different times. I tested it on leisure rides, weekends, and during my daily commutes. The motorcycle on which I tested it is the BMW F900GS. I also tested it with and without connection to my iPhone. During this test, I had an exceptional riding experience; here is my review!

Overall Review of BMW ConnectedRide Navigator

During this test, I found many positive aspects with this GPS. Firstly, it is very user-friendly, whether operated manually or with the wheel. The menus and options are clear, and I am certain to use it again on my future motorcycle outings, whether short or long. Here are the detailed strengths and weaknesses that I found with the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator.

Highlights of the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator

My experience started with powering on the device, which was very simple. Connecting it to my motorcycle and phone via Bluetooth was straightforward. When starting the bike, the Navigator turns on automatically without needing to press a button.

Regarding its use with the motorcycle, I particularly liked being able to use it with the multi-controller, especially for easy zooming in and out while riding. Also, when my fuel level was low, I appreciated the GPS indicating the next exit for refueling. Moreover, all information about my motorcycle could be quickly displayed on the screen, such as the bike's lean angle, its levels, etc.

In terms of navigation, the GPS displayed real-time speed limits and was very accurate with distances to the next exit (an area where the Nav 6 could sometimes falter). My favorite options for planning my routes included choosing wind strength and avoiding tunnels.

I immediately appreciated the screen; its touch responsiveness is excellent, and the interface is fast. It's sufficiently large to view key data. The matte screen is quite bright, even in direct sunlight, unlike my TFT screen which became unreadable. Concerning touch sensitivity, I was worried rain might affect the screen's responsiveness, but that wasn't the case.

Compared to using my phone, I appreciated being able to keep it safely in my pocket. After my rides, I loved being able to review my recorded trips!

Another positive point is that the GPS directions do not interrupt music but only lower its volume.

Weak Points of the ConnectedRide Navigator

However, I did notice some weak points, especially regarding the phone: when connected to Wi-Fi hotspot, the GPS uses mobile data from the plan. Therefore, you need to remember to disconnect it if you have a limited data plan. Its functionality is reduced when not connected to the phone, but it's sufficient for navigation.

The screen displays key information clearly, but without glasses, I had difficulty reading, for example, the estimated time of arrival and other small details. However, this did not prevent me from reaching my destination!

Recording rides is great, unless you get checked because it also records the speed... Be cautious during checks.

Overall, I mainly remember positive aspects from my tests and experience, which I am certain to repeat. I highly recommend without hesitation this BMW ConnectedRide Navigator which, I'm sure, will enhance your driving experience.
